how to: bible Journal for beginners/non artists

In order to grow in your relationship with God it is so important to spend intentional time with Him.

I love to Bible journal because I get to use my CREATivity while I spend time with my CREATOR.

When I spend my quiet time with God I love to use my creativity.

Bible journaling helps me to focus on and better understand specific verses.

I hope this post inspires you to spend time with God in His word!

What is Bible Journaling?

It’s reading Gods word and engaging with the scriptures in a creative way.

Bible Journaling will most likely look a little different for everyone and that’s pretty cool.

When I journal I enjoy using highlighters, stickers, and a pen. You don’t need anything fancy.

You may be thinking “But I can’t draw”…

THATS OK! You don’t have to know how to draw to Bible journal. It’s not about your artistic or lack of  artistic skill. Its about your willingness to learn and spend time with God.

Try to remember that you are inherently creative. Our creator is HIGHLY creative! Look how He masterfully created you and the world that surrounds us!

When you cook you are being creative. When you put your makeup on you are being creative. But even you don’t cook or don’t wear makeup…trust me you are still creative!

Washi tape and highlighters are an easy way to add a creative element to your Bible. Stencils are also a great tool. I have seen some great stencils at the Dollar Tree recently.

Find a quiet place to Bible journal

It’s important to find a place away from life’s distractions in order to focus on Gods word. I personally  enjoy reading my Bible outside on the porch.

I used to have a prayer closet. It was so cozy. I had a fuzzy rug, pillows, and bible verses written and taped on the walls.

Your quiet space doesn’t have to be that involved though. Any place will do.

Prayer

Prayer is such a gift. We get direct access to the father through prayer. Thank you Jesus. Before you jump into the word I encourage you to ask God to open your heart and mind to understanding the word.

My Bible has lined columns which I love using to write my prayers.

It’s cool to look back on prayers I have written out and to see how God has answered those prayers.

using The Bible app

Recently I have really enjoyed using the Bible app during my Bible time.

You can go any part of the Bible in any version you like, and have the app read it to you! It has helped me to hear the word out loud and follow along in my Bible. Studying the Bible this way has made it easier to understand certain things, and has help concentrate better.

Things to journal about:

  • Prayers – talk to God as you study. Write out your prayers.
  • Song lyrics – a lot of Christian songs have taken verses from the Bible. When I come across a verse that is found in one of the songs, I’ll sing it, and write the lyrics  the margins of my Bible.
  • Sermon notes – whether you are watching church online or are in person have your Bible open and be ready to take notes. My Bible has lined pages in the back for just this purpose.
  • Specific Bible Verses – when a specific verse stands out I will write it in fancy founts in the margin to help me remember it and memorize it.
  • Definitions – the Bible has some complicated words. When I come across one I am unfamiliar with I will ask siri and then write it out.

Start simple

You don’t need much to start journaling. A few highlighters, a pencil, and a pen will do.

Highlighters

You could even create your own highlighter code. Use specific colors to mark certain types of verses. Ex:

  • Red= law + wisdom
  • Blue=prophesy
  •  pink= Jesus

Don't limit yourself

There are infinite possibilities when it comes to being creative!

Remember: There is no wrong way to Bible journal. And there is no right or wrong way to study the word of God.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Its ok that not everything you do will turn out to be a masterpiece. Just remember YOU are HIS masterpiece!!!

Enjoy the process, and the time you are spending with the Holy Spirit.

God has created you for a relationship with Him. He delights in the time you spend with Him. Spending time in God’s word and knowing it is so important in order to sustain us through our daily battles.

Happy journaling!
